Are you a cataract patient? Have you had astigmatism issues throughout your life? There is a new lens implant that can actually help correct your astigmatism right in the lens implant you have in cataract surgery. In early methods of cataract surgery a single vision monofocal lens implant was used in cataract surgery. These lenses did not account for astigmatism in any correction that they provided. This meant that cataract surgeons had to develop other methods of fixing astigmatism. This had been done with LASIK or even Limbal relaxing incisions after cataract surgery.
In January 2007, Medicare approved a new monofocal IOL called the Acrysof Toric IOL for patients with cataracts and astigmatism. The AcrySof Toric corrects for both conditions, cataracts and astigmatism. The Acrysof Toric IOL is a foldable, single piece lens that is implanted during cataract surgery to replace the clouded lens. The unique design of the AcrySof Toric IOL makes it possible to reduce or eliminate corneal astigmatism and significantly improve uncorrected distance vision. AcrySof Toric lens provides excellent distance vision, independent of eyeglasses and contact lenses.
Since the Acrysof Toric IOL is a monofocal lens, it will still be necessary to use reading glasses for fine print. However distance vision will be greatly improved especially since a patient's astigmatism will also be corrected. If you are interested in the TORIC IOL and would like to get more information from our practice we are happy to provide this. Please feel free to watch our Toric IOL video as well.
